What is slam?

A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by randomly selected members of the audience. In a poetry slam, members of the audience are chosen by an M.C. or host to act as judges for the event. After each poet performs, each judge awards a score to that poem. Scores generally range between zero and ten. The highest and lowest score are dropped, giving each performance a rating between zero and thirty points.

How can I slam?

UConn Slams

Poetic Release holds approximately one slam a month per semester. There are approximately eight slots open for each slam. Poets who win first and second in each monthly slam qualifies for a spot in the Grand Slam held in February. The Grand Slam is used to select the Slam Team that represents UConn at Nationals.

Slams are generally hosted by visiting artists who hold a feature slot for the night. The night is closed out by an open mic, an opportunity for any member of the UConn community to share their writing.

Slams are open to all students in the UConn community. There is usually a pre-registeration process before the slam.

1. Send an email to uconnpoeticrelease@gmail.com  with your name requesting a slot in the slam.

2. Wait for a confirmation email letting you know your slot has been secured.

If you don't want to participate in the slam but would still like to share your work, open mics are sign up at the door. Or you can volunteer to be the sacrificial poet for the slam.
